Social media encompasses four
characteristics: persistency, visibility, spreadability, and searchability.
These aspects have triggered many concerns for many adults where social media
sites can be viewed as hazardous for many teens. The content in social media
that teens post does not go away and is capable of being seen by a large
audience. Because of this, audiences are able to spread information by sharing
posts or re-tweeting which is one of the main aspects of social media. The
content that teens post is searchable and many can view posts even in the
absence of a social media account. Despite parents concerns over teens
accessing social media sites, overall, it is an important aspect in modern society.
Teens are in the process of creating their own identity and developing
relationships outside of their family. Creating friendships is an important
part in the process of maturing and reaching adulthood. Through networking,
teens can remain in contact with their friends that they have made.
The
coming of age process requires teens to turn to social media sites where most
teens nowadays have access to multiple accounts. Social media sites are where
teens congregate much like where adults go such as restaurants, clubs, and
bars. Teens have a strong desire to be part of public spaces and to be a part
of the larger world. Although social media plays a major role in the coming of
age process, parents believe that it can be a major distraction and dangerous.
Questions constantly are asked by parents such as: Is my child addicted to
technology? Or how will they be able to perform in school if they are
constantly socializing on the internet? These are some of the many questions
that are being asked by parents. An example that Boyd uses to show this
disconnect between parents and teens is prevalent with Amy, a teenage girl.
During the week and weekend she can barely see friends because her schedule is
so busy with homework, jobs, and sports. As a result, Amy resorts to MySpace
where she can connect with her friends, however, her parents continue to
disapprove of her use of social media and MySpace. Although MySpace is an
outdated social media site and is not used by many teens now, the growth of
social media, especially Facebook has reduced anxiety for adults because adults
use networking sites as well. They have knowledge about this site, causing them
to be more comfortable with their teens resorting to this site.
